Methodology of Hadith Understanding: A Study of Methods, Interpretation, and Resolution of Mukhtalif Hadith

Abstract

This article aims to examine the methodology of understanding hadith, which includes methods, interpretive techniques, and the resolution of mukhtalif (apparently contradictory) hadith. This study employs a qualitative approach using library research by analyzing various relevant classical and contemporary sources. The discussion covers the fundamental concepts of method and methodology, the meaning of fahhama, and several interpretive approaches such as the tahlili, ijmali, and maudhu‘i methods. In addition, this article highlights textual and contextual interpretation techniques in understanding hadith, including an analysis of mukhtalif hadith and strategies for resolving them through compromise, naskh (abrogation), and tarjih (preference). The findings indicate that the methodology of hadith understanding plays a crucial role as a scientific framework in producing comprehensive, systematic, and contextual interpretations, thereby contributing to the development of hadith studies as well as to proportional and responsible religious practices.
